What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is a philosophy of medicine and healing rather than one particular type of therapy. It is the only healing profession that blends natural non-toxic therapies with the latest in scientific and clinical research. Naturopathic physicians focus on the overall health of the person rather than suppressing the symptoms, which are often only clues of the underlying cause of disease. They also focus heavily on prevention of disease and maintenance of good health and lifestyle.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine
- The Healing Power of Nature
Healing mechanisms of the body and mind exist to maintain and restore health. Naturopathic doctors seek to support this healing process and eliminate the blockages to health.
- First Do No Harm
Non-invasive therapies are used to minimize the risk of harmful side effects. When a more aggressive treatment is required, naturopathic physicians are trained extensively on how and when to
refer to a qualified practitioner.
- Find the Cause
Naturopathic Medicine seeks to find and remove the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms are the body’s reaction to disease rather than the disease itself.
For example, headaches are not caused by aspirin deficiencies; they are a symptom of an underlying imbalance that needs to be addressed in order to change the pattern. The cause of the headaches may be related to hormonal, endocrine, cardiovascular, nutritional or other problems. Symptoms may even be part of the body’s own healing process, such as the inflammation of a sprained ankle bringing the cells of the immune system and healing to that site. If the symptoms are simply suppressed the underlying cause has not been addressed and the disease may continue,
or may even move to a deeper level. Naturopathic medicine focuses on the underlying cause of disease and removing obstacles to cure.
- Treat the Whole Person
Health and disease result from a complex interaction between physical, psychological, genetic, environmental, social and many other factors that cannot be ignored if true healing is to take place. Naturopathic physicians treat the whole person by taking all these factors into account.
- Physician as Teacher
A doctor is not a mechanic who fixes people when they break. Health requires a partnership between doctor and patient. Naturopathic physicians share information and knowledge with their patients allowing them to make informed choices about their own personal health. They seek to work
with patients to design effective and comprehensively individualized treatments.
- Prevention
Unfortunately most Americans see a doctor only when they are ill. In response to the alarming increase in chronic disease, lifestyle and dietary related
illness in this country, prevention is a large focus of Naturopathic medicine. The goal is to teach a healthy lifestyle and to prevent minor illnesses from developing into more serious and chronic degenerative diseases. This is done by providing education and care to patients who are well in order to keep them that way.

It
has been said, that in some cultures,
the doctors only get paid when the
village is well; Recognizing
prevention as the key to continued
good health and lifestyle.
Therapeutic Modalities
Botanical Medicine (Herbal Medicine) The use of plants as medicine is the oldest know form of healthcare. There is more clinical knowledge, practice, experimentation and investigation than for any other type of medicine. Modern scientific researchers are now catching up by using their methods to continue to expand this vast field of
study.
Naturopathic physicians are licensed in the state of Washington to provide a wide range of natural treatments as well as some prescription medicines in a primary care setting.

Acupuncture is a comprehensive system of medicine with a clinical history of at least 3,000 years. New techniques and developments have continued to develop making acupuncture an important mode of treatment for modern degenerative diseases. Acupuncture provides a method of treatment that can harmonize the imbalances present in disease conditions, which lead to illness. In this way acupuncture can be effectively used in disease prevention as well as a wide variety of conditions.

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release cells that regulate the immune, hormonal and endocrine systems. As a result acupuncture produces profound and lasting effects on general health. The practice of acupuncture involves the insertion of several extremely fine needles, about the width of a human hair. When the needles are inserted by a skilled acupuncturist there is usually no pain at all. Occasionally there is a brief pinch that quickly fades. There may be a tingling, warmth, heaviness or numbness. Most people become extremely relaxed, meditative and often fall asleep. At the end of the treatment they feel relaxed but rejuvenated, which may last for several days.
Treatments are generally spaced one to two weeks apart and given in an initial series of 6-8 treatments of a one hour length.
Non-needling techniques available.
